From October 22nd through November 19th, we will read James Cone’s The Cross and the Lynching Tree together. The Cross and the Lynching Tree is a classic of black liberation theology. In reviewing the book, Taylor Branch wrote that “James Cone has rescued the cross from formulaic theologies of salvation by proxy. His brave book lights fires of inquiry on the mysterious bond between suffering and love. After reading it, no aspiring Christian…can pretend that the lynching tree is about someone other than ourselves.”
We will read it over the course of five weeks, and discuss each week’s portion during our Thursday night Adult Formation time (from 7:00 – 8:00 PM). If you don’t already own a copy of the book, please purchase this edition, so that we can avoid any variance with page numbers. As we read together we’ll follow this schedule:
WEEK ONE – Read the Introduction and Chapter One in advance
WEEK TWO – Read Chapter Two in advance
WEEK THREE – Read Chapter Three in advance
WEEK FOUR – Read Chapter Four in advance
WEEK FIVE – Read Chapter Five and the Conclusion in advance
We’re so looking forward to this, and hope you’ll join us. No need to register in advance. We’ll meet together on Zoom, and you can follow this link to join us:
