 Clinking Quarters

All quarters offered in the Sunday collection plates are used to support our outreach ministries, particularly to purchase the food for our twice yearly meal at St. John’s, Franklinton. Each time you donate a quarter, clink it on the side of the plate so we can be reminded of the needs of our community and the good works that your quarters help fund.

Bishop’s Reception Luncheon – Thank You!

Many thanks to everyone who provided food and volunteers at last week’s reception luncheon for Bishop Price. The food was great and the reception was a wonderful success. Special thanks to Kaitlin Raver and Cindy Olmstead, who provided their time and talent to make sure the food items and volunteers were coordinated through Sign Up Genius. Their extra efforts ensured the success of the event.

Calling football parking volunteers!

Two volunteers are needed to staff our parking lot during each of OSU’s home football games. The lot fills up very quickly, so the shift is only 2-3 hours.

This is a fun and easy way to help out at our biggest fundraiser of the year. Please contact Mikalene Guiser at mguiser@hotmail.com or 614-406-4224 to sign up for a game.

Here’s the latest update as of 9.16.18:

Sept. 22 vs Tulane, Time 3:30pm (Edward Lasseigne and Elliott Bush)

Oct. 6 vs Indiana, Time TBD (2 needed)

Oct. 13 vs Minnesota, Time TBD  (Cindy/Bob Olmstead + Rob Wood)

Nov. 3 vs Nebraska, Time TBD (2 needed)

Nov. 24 vs Michigan, Noon (Thomas Clark + Matthew Strauss)

(TBD game start times will be updated as they become available.)

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Discussion for September 16, 2018

Everyone is invited to join us on Sunday mornings at 9:15 am in Hobson Hall for the discussion! On Sunday, September 2nd, we will begin Genesis, a commentary by Joan E. Cook in the New Collegeville Bible Commentary Series. We will discuss Chapter 11. If you haven’t gotten the book yet, just read an introduction to Genesis in your Bible or online and the verses we will be discussing. If you do not have a copy of the book, you are invited to come and listen and join in the conversation.

You can contribute your questions and comments to the discussion or just listen if that is more comfortable. Looking forward to a thoughtful, sometimes deep, conversation on Sunday morning!

NSI “Dishin’ for Hunger” event

September 29, 2018, 6:00pm – 9:00pm

Instructional Kitchen – Ohio Union

Our neighbors are in need. We have seen a groundbreaking level of need in the communities we serve. This year, through the end of August 2018, we have seen 7,114 families. This is more that we served before, during or since the Great Recession.

Through August we have:

*           Served 5,473 families in our choice food pantry (18,054 people)

*           Have had 349 families visit our clothing room (1374 people)

*           Celebrated by giving 317 Easter Food Baskets (988 people)

*           Aided 35 homeless families with a prepack 3-day supply of food (82 individuals)

*           Supplied 572 backpacks to children through our Back to School program

*           Distributed Fresh Produce to 720 families (1,906 individuals) at our monthly Markets

*           Gave 47 senior households (128 people) a Senior Food Box filled with shelf stable items.

*           So far this year, 7,114 families served (23,441 people) and 399,806 meals distributed

The need is great, but so are our supporters. Every year, we host Dishin’ for Hunger, an evening of food, fun and fellowship in the Instructional Kitchen in the Ohio Union building at The Ohio State University. This year it will be on Saturday, September 29th starting at 6:00 pm. Parking is free. At this event, with your help, we will raise enough to feed 2,445 people. This year, we have chefs from across the community, including one that worked in the kitchen of a Michelin 3-star restaurant. It’s an opportunity to see chefs prepare their signature dish LIVE and get to taste it too.

We hope you are able to join us for this engaging event, while also ensuring we continue to provide an emergency 5-day food supply for our neighbors in need. I have attached a link to our Eventbrite site, https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dishin-for-hunger-tickets-49286121115. And thank you, in advance, for your consideration on supporting Neighborhood Services Inc.

In Peace,

Martin Butler

Kiwanis Shoe Drive

The Worthington-Linworth Kiwanis club is conducting a shoe drive for developing countries where shoes are not readily available (but injuries and parasites are) to allow individuals to start an enterprise repairing and selling the shoes that are collected. After the first delivery, the individual pays for the next from his/her earnings and is thus able to support a family while providing a greatly needed product.

The collection box at St. Stephen’s will be located in the outer office between Hobson Hall and the Sanctuary. The box will be emptied regularly until the drive ends in mid-October. Thank you!

Update: The shoe drive is off to a good start with six pairs of shoes donated last Sunday! Thank you for donating! Remember: any shoes (even slippers), any condition, even shoes with no mates can be made wearable for those without foot protection. Direct any questions to Julia Sheppard at mmesheppard@yahoo.com.
