March 2
Services at Noon and 7:00 PM
Lent begins with a service of penitence. We gather for prayer, and for the imposition of ashes. We are reminded to seek balance in our lives by setting aside practices and behaviors that are in danger of becoming compulsive, and we humbly recognize that we are not the center of creation or the sum total of all that is.
During the service, ash is used to draw the sign of the cross on our foreheads, as the priest or other celebrant says “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Rather than being a sign of morbidity, the ash cross reminds us that we can let go of some of the pressures and anxieties that pervade our lives, because they are momentary, while God, and our souls’ rest in God, is eternal.
