Janet will be compiling a list of folks to send cards to on behalf of the church. Please contact Janet if you have names and addresses of people who you think might appreciate a card.
NSI Collection for April – Personal Hygiene Products (focus on feminine hygiene)
This month, we are collecting personal hygiene products, with a focus on feminine hygiene products such as sanitary pads and tampons.
Thank you to those who brought in non-food items for NSI, and a big thank you to those who supplied treats both healthy and otherwise during the Trade-in Bake Sale. We collected over 500 personal care and household products for NSI, and over 300 boxes of Mac n’ Cheese for the NSI Easter collection. Thank you all for your generosity this Lenten season.
Nehemiah Action May 7th
May 7 is the date of the Nehemiah Action, and the St. Stephen’s BREAD team will make it as easy as possible for you to join in – We will sponsor a potluck dinner, beginning at 5:00pm in Hobson Hall. A school bus will transport us to the state fairgrounds, leaving at 6:15pm, and returning us here around 9:00pm. All you need to do is get a ticket and BE THERE.
Here is the weekly update of where the four active research committees are now:
“Youth and Family Concerns”
Family first…housing now! This week, the committee met with Columbus City Councilmember, Jaiza Page. She tentatively confirmed her attendance at the Nehemiah Action. There is a follow up meeting scheduled with her at the beginning of May. The committee will also be meeting with Mayor Ginther later this month. Follow the link below to an article about the importance of housing.
The committee met with Columbus School Board President Gary Baker. The purpose of the meeting is to prepare for the Nehemiah Action. Baker and three other School Board Members have confirmed their attendance to the Nehemiah Action – Michael Cole, W. Shawna Gibbs, and Dominic Paretti. A meeting with Juvenile Court Judge Elizabeth Gill is scheduled for next week, to review the progress in Restorative Justice in her court.
“Hire and Better Pay! Don’t Throw Away!”/Jobs
There was a recent meeting with the head of Installed Building Products, Jeff Edwards. He has been working with BREAD on a pilot project (starting with Rhema Christian Center) to hire people with criminal backgrounds. He has been encouraged by the referrals that have come in so far. Six (6) people have been hired and the company will continue to hire! Know someone willing to work in construction? Contact Pastor Dan Harris at Rhema Christian Center at (614) 471-9673.
OSU law students have expressed interest in helping to move the campaign forward. A class at Ohio Dominican University is also circulating a petition in support of the municipal ID. This week, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Columbus) joined the One ID Columbus coalition to help BREAD move this effort forward.
