Bishop’s Reception Luncheon

We are hosting Bishop Price, honoring St. Stephen–our patron saint, and celebrating all our ongoing and new ministries! Join us after the 10:30 service on September 9th with a contribution to a spectacular luncheon.
The Luncheon Theme is LOAVES & FISH…symbolizing the miracle of abundance through the act of sharing our resources, time, and talent. Roasted salmon will be provided as the main dish. We will be asking for bread, salads, side fruit & vegatable dishes, and desserts.

All quarters offered in the Sunday collection plates are used to support our outreach ministries, particularly to purchase the food for our twice yearly meal at St. John’s, Franklinton. Each time you donate a quarter, clink it on the side of the plate so we can be reminded of the needs of our community and the good works that your quarters help fund.
Thrive/CYFM Announcements for September
Our children’s spiritual formation classes (Thrive) will begin meeting again on Sunday, September 9th during the 10:30 service.
The Central Ohio Youth Coalition is meeting at 5:00pm on Sunday September 16th at
St. Philip’s Episcopal Church (166 Woodland Ave., Columbus) for a youth mixer. In addition to games and getting-to-know-each other activities, time will be spent generating ideas for six annual coalition youth events which the students will plan and lead with help from adults. This event is for ages 11-18, 6th grade and up.
Calling football parking volunteers!
Two volunteers are needed to staff our parking lot during each of OSU’s home football games. The lot fills up very quickly, so the shift is only 2-3 hours.

“The F Word” is a traveling exhibit that will be on display at St. Stephen’s this fall, October 16-30. It will be installed in Hobson Hall and we will open the hall daily from 11am to 7pm to share the exhibit with our community. Please plan to view it and invite your friends and neighbors.
We will need volunteer docents to be present in Hobson so that we can offer this to our neighbors. If you are able to give a few hours of your time to be the face of St. Stephen’s, please contact Kaethe Sandman (firstname.lastname@example.org).

House Manager Position opening
From time to time, St. Stephen’s hosts student recitals in the sanctuary. In order to accommodate their needs, a St. Stephen’s House Manager is required to open the building, set up microphones, stands, lights, etc. and then pick up and lock up after the event.
Three hour call – $50.00 per event

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Discussion for September 2, 2018
Everyone is invited to join us on Sunday mornings at 9:15 am in Hobson Hall for the discussion! On Sunday, September 2nd, we will begin Genesis, a commentary by Joan E. Cook in the New Collegeville Bible Commentary Series. We will discuss the “Introduction” and “Genesis 1:1-2:4,” pages 5-16. If you haven’t gotten the book yet, just read an introduction to Genesis in your Bible or online and the verses we will be discussing. If you do not have a copy of the book, you are invited to come and listen and join in the conversation.
You can contribute your questions and comments to the discussion or just listen if that is more comfortable. Looking forward to a thoughtful, sometimes deep, conversation on Sunday morning!
NSI Food Pantry “Christmas in July” Appeal
Martin Butler, Executive Director of Neighborhood Services, Inc., is appealing to the community to participate in NSI’s Christmas in July campaign. If enough generous people provide NSI with just $5.50 for each of the next six months or a onetime $55.00 donation, NSI will have a solid base of funds they can draw on to serve our neighbors. NSI needs approximately $12,000 each month to pay rent, utilities and programming costs. Without additional help at this time, NSI will soon have to begin to implement some or all of the following: limiting the amount of food distributed; going from providing a seven day supply of food to a three day supply; only being open three days a week instead of four; serving only four zip codes and no one else in Franklin County, including the homeless; and potentially ending all holiday food programs – no Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas meals. For September, we’ll be collecting feminine hygiene products such as sanitary pads, tampons, and undergarment liners.

Kiwanis Shoe Drive
The Worthington-Linworth Kiwanis club is conducting a shoe drive for developing countries where shoes are not readily available (but injuries and parasites are) to allow individuals to start an enterprise repairing and selling the shoes that are collected. After the first delivery, the individual pays for the next from his/her earnings and is thus able to support a family while providing a greatly needed product.
The collection box at St. Stephen’s will be located in the outer office between Hobson Hall and the Sanctuary. The box will be emptied regularly until the drive ends in mid-October. Thank you!

Episcopal Night at the Symphony
Friday, November 9, 2018 – Ohio Theatre
Fr. Paul Williams of St. Andrew’s, Pickerington and Fr. Bruce Smith of St. James, Columbus serve as the Supreme Coordinating Committee of Episcopal Night at the Symphony and are pleased to announce that our next evening together will be for a performance of G.F. Handel’s beloved oratorio, “Messiah” at the Ohio Theater on Friday evening, November 9th, 2018. Ticket prices will be $50 per person and will include food and beverages at a 6:00pm reception in the Galbreath Pavilion, hopefully a visit by Symphony conductor Rossen Milanov and Chorus Director Ronald Jenkins, a pre-concert talk in the theater by Christopher Purdy and orchestra seating for the concert. (Such a deal… almost as good a deal as CAPA’s Summer Movie Series!) If you already have tickets for the concert, not to worry! You can still join us for the reception for $20 per person. We will begin taking ticket reservations around Labor Day, so please watch this space for more information. See you there. Hallelujah!
BREAD begins its year shortly with “house meetings” where we listen to YOUR stories. What keeps you awake at night? The 40+ BREAD churches in Columbus will all participate in this dialog to identify a community problem to tackle this year.
Each member of the BREAD team will hold a house meeting, and you can expect a personal invitation to discuss your concerns for this community. House meetings will follow the 10:30 service.

Book Club for September
Book Club welcomes all, meeting on the second Wednesday of each month. The September meeting will be on Wednesday, September 12 starting at 6:30 PM with a potluck meal. Please bring food and/or beverage to share. We’re meeting at Elliott Bush’s home (740-398-6997, firstname.lastname@example.org ). Kindly let Elliot know ahead of time if you plan to attend so he may plan for the right number of people. After dinner, we’ll be discussing The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen, 83¼ years old, published anonymously, translated from the Dutch by Hester Velmans. If you wish to read ahead, the October book is The Grid: the fraying wires between Americans and our energy future by Gretchen Bakke.

It is a time out from daily doings to just BE in Friendship over a cup of tea with conversations to feed the soul.
We meet twice monthly: the first Thursday morning of the month will offer a “Coffee Klatch” from 9:30-11:30am for those available to meet during the day (kiddos welcome)the third Thursday evening offers a “Girls Night Out or In” from 7:00-9:00pm.

The Technical Institute (ITSM) celebrated its 34th anniversary on Friday, August 24. All of the staff, students, and a Service Team from Toronto gathered in the chapel at 7:30 a.m. to start the day with a Eucharist led by Padre Gerardo, the dean from the Episcopal Cathedral in Tegucigalpa, and Padre Luis, the chaplain at ITSM.
Following the service, the celebration continued with a soccer game – the final match of a tournament that had been played out since June. The six best players at ITSM were made team captains and they carefully chose five more to complete each of their teams. They played every Wednesday afternoon to determine the two teams that would play in the Anniversary Final; Score and Juventus. A crowd of students, staff, and volunteers gathered around the freshly painted concrete soccer pitch and watched as the two evenly matched teams played out the final. In the end, Score came out on top with a 6-3 victory. The majority of the players on the winning team came from El Hogar’s elementary program, and one player credited their victory to the bond they have from all the years they have known each other.
Now crowned the best team at ITSM (at least for now!), Score had one more game to play…the teachers! The teachers put a team together with the bravest and best, and the game was the highlight of the day. The students thought the game would be easy, but it turns out that the teachers have more skill than they were expecting! After the first couple of minutes, the students picked up the pace and started to play with a little more power. They scored back and forth and were tied for a good portion of the game. The crowd was wild during the whole game; some of them cheering for the teachers and some cheering for the students. Scoring goals for the teachers were Profe Gerardo, Don Tino, and Profe Cristian. The goal scorers on the students’ team were Moises, Jose Angel, and Josue. When the final whistle blew, the teachers were ahead by one goal and took the victory with a score of 5-4.
After the game, all of the staff, students, and volunteers enjoyed a barbecue lunch prepared on the grill down by the river. Before cutting the cake, Lazaro, the director of ITSM, spoke about the pride he has being involved in the years of history that ITSM has educating the youth of Honduras. He stated that he, and the staff, want the best for the students, and that this celebration was one to remember as El Hogar moves towards an exciting future.

Support children’s rights with El Hogar!
Over the years at El Hogar, we’ve been asking: What are the fundamental needs of children? Today, we’re asking: What are the fundamental rights of children? And, how can we best protect the rights of the most vulnerable children in Honduras? Why do we care about the rights of children? It’s the morally right thing to do. It leads to a more literate, healthy, equitable, and prosperous society.
Poverty strips children of their rights. Although global prosperity overall has risen in recent years, it remains true that nearly half of the children in Honduras live in extreme poverty – in households earning less than $2 per day. Extreme poverty among children leads to hunger, illness, permanent cognitive injury, lack of education, child labor and trafficking, and death. And it persists over generations.
Poverty is a complex issue with many contributing factors. People need access to jobs, education, medical care, and safe living conditions. The cycle of poverty continues when generations of children have little or no access to these basic components of life. At El Hogar, we strive to provide these for our students, and to equip them with the tools to change the trajectory of their lives and those of future generations.
The reduction of poverty must begin with protecting the rights of children. Investing in children is a sound ethical and economic investment, with high rates of return. Through your involvement with El Hogar, you are working to defend the rights of our children and young people.
Make an investment in El Hogar’s children and young people today. Let’s give them all we can to become the best they can be. Let’s equip them to believe in themselves and face their challenges with the confidence of knowing they have rights, not just needs.
